The Proposal

The destination wedding of Sonam and Neil in Switzerland is truly remarkable, capturing our admiration with its splendid blend of centuries-old traditions set against the breathtaking backdrop of snow-capped Swiss mountains. This wedding is a timeless celebration.

Their love story unfolds from the tender age of three and a half, as Sonam and Neil, who attended the same schools, reconnect during the tenth grade after Sonam had changed schools a couple of years earlier.

Reflecting on their journey, Bride Sonam shares, "We were part of a similar circle of friends, but it took seven years after graduating from school for anything to happen. There was always an underlying connection, and when it finally materialized, we became inseparable."

However, the timing was not ideal initially. "Two and a half years later, when we finally got together, we knew without a doubt that this was meant to be," she adds.

The turning point came seven months later when Neil proposed in the enchanting Maldives. Recounting the moment, Sonam says, "He visited my home while I was away and sought my parents' blessings. He also invited them to the Maldives, emphasizing the importance of having the entire family present because we both value family deeply."

She fondly recalls, "We were on my birthday trip to the Maldives, and four or five days later, he surprised me with the proposal, surrounded by both our families. That, for me, was the most special part of the entire proposal."

In a storybook-worthy union, Sonam's dream of a lavish and exquisite wedding came to life amidst the stunning landscapes of Switzerland. The choice of Switzerland was not only for its opulence but also a nod to the couple's shared passion for skiing, which had initially brought them together.

The nuptials held 2,000 meters above sea level in Zermatt, posed unique challenges for Sonam. With the entire region being car-free, every element, from the decorations to their attire, had to be airlifted. Despite the daunting logistics, the meticulous effort paid off, offering the couple a picturesque backdrop - a radiantly sunny day with the Matterhorn adorned in pristine white snow emerged as the defining moment.

Leading up to the wedding celebrations, the region faced several snowstorms. However, Sonam reminisces with joy, "During our events, there was suddenly sunshine and a breathtaking white mountain. It felt like the most unforgettable moment, almost as if the universe orchestrated it for us. My planner used to joke, 'Your husband wants a warm day and plenty of snow; that's nearly impossible.' Yet, that's precisely what unfolded for us. It's a memory that will stay with me forever." This enchanting blend of challenges and serendipity added a touch of magic to Sonam's Switzerland wedding, creating a story that will be cherished for a lifetime.

The couple embraced the essence of a traditional Indian wedding, performing the sacred Seven Pheras around a ceremonial fire. Adding a touch of home, Sonam's mother-in-law brought a few significant items from India for the Puja, a holy ceremony integral to the celebration.

Preceding the grand ceremony, the couple immersed themselves in the Haldi event the day prior. This ritual involves applying turmeric paste to the faces and bodies of the bride and groom, a beauty tradition deeply rooted in Indian culture. Sonam reflects on this unique cultural practice, stating, "It's a beauty ritual that we do in India," adding an extra layer of cultural richness to their mountain-top celebration.

Sonam's choice of outfit added a touch of traditional Indian charm to the alpine setting. Opting for a classic Indian lehenga, the ensemble featured a two-piece design with a modest top and an extravagant skirt, complemented by a flowing dupatta. Sonam further embraced her Indian heritage by adorning her bun with an extended veil, adding an extra layer of cultural richness to the high-altitude festivities.

Opting for the renowned designer Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla, she explained, "I chose them because of their strong heritage in our Indian culture. They are the epitome of couture, with unparalleled attention to detail and exquisite embroidery. In my opinion, they create the finest custom-made outfits, and that's exactly what they did for me."

Highlighting the personalized touch, Sonam expressed her delight, "They embroidered mine and Neil's names in golden thread, adorned with hearts and crystals cascading throughout the entire outfit. It was an absolute dream." She emphasized that the decision to wear Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla was a natural choice, stating, "It was almost a no-brainer. I knew when I got married that they were the designers I wanted to wear, and Neil was equally certain about choosing a creation from Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla."

Advice for Future Brides:

"Embrace your authentic self on your wedding day. My advice to every bride-to-be is to stay true to your vision. Follow what brings you joy. Don't be swayed by guest lists, social media expectations, or any external pressures. Choose a venue that brings you immense happiness, assemble a team that resonates with you, and wear an outfit that truly delights you. It's your day, so do exactly what feels right for you.
