Q: What trends have you noticed in 2011?

There was a rising demand for practical Indian wear, where traditional styles met contemporary twists. Women sought easy-to-wear outfits, and my collection introduced attached dupattas and outfits with built-in jewelry, eliminating the need for heavy neckpieces.

Q: Do you have a personal favorite bridal lehenga style?

I absolutely love the chiffon tiered fish-kali lehenga. It offers a gown-like silhouette, which is both modern and traditional.

Q: How would you describe a Payal Singhal bride?

My bride is modern, confident, and has a distinct sense of style. She knows what she wants but appreciates flexibility. My versatile designs appeal to various women-from traditional Indian brides to contemporary South Asian women and New York fashion-forward individuals.

Q: What advice do you have for brides selecting a wedding lehenga?

While it’s great to have a vision, don’t be overly rigid about color or silhouette. Be open to experimenting with different options, and listen to your designer’s advice.

Q: Besides the lehenga, what should brides splurge on?

Definitely earrings! Invest in three or four pairs of statement earrings, as they can easily complement various outfits-whether Indian or Western. I’m particularly fond of the versatile designs by Shravan Satyani from Satyani Jewellers, Bandra.

Q: What do you enjoy when you’re not designing?

I love unwinding by watching television, but I steer clear of fashion shows. Instead, I prefer mindless TV for relaxation!
